Spice Girls re-unite for musical launch

July 9th, 2012

If all indications are to be believed, the 1990s are back – and we were provided with the most compelling evidence yet this morning when the Spice Girls re-united to officially launch their long-awaited musical: Viva forever! Due to open at the Piccadilly Theatre in London shortly before Christmas 2012, the show is being produced by Judy Craymer of Mama Mia! fame, and will include material by Jennifer Saunders.

With their larger-than-life personalities and love for all-things kitsch, it seemed inevitable that the musical careers of Mel B, Mel C, Geri, Emma Bunton and the artist now known as Victoria Beckham would eventually be brought to the stage and it’s great to see all five members of the group back together. however, if reports are anything to go by, it was no easy feat getting the five women, who represented ‘girl power’ in their heyday, into one room for today’s photocall: they have apparently agreed to appear together again only on the opening night, and will not be doing any joint interviews.

The play itself will recount a thinly-veiled fictional version of the band’s inception, but brings the story up to date with a reality TV premise: the main character, Viva, appears on an X-Factor style TV show before being thrown together with four other girls in a manufactured band. the band go on to receive international stardom but it ultimately costs them their friendships. the show will feature classic Spice Girls songs including ‘Who Do You Think You are?’ ‘Wannabe,’ and ‘Mama’. It’s sure to be a huge hit among many of today’s women wanting to re-live their youth!
