Glamour Awards: Kylie scoops Outstanding Contribution award after 25 years in music

June 15th, 2012

The star, who celebrated her 44th birthday on Monday, was presented with the title by Scissor Sisters frontman Jake Shears.

2012 also marks Minogue’s 25th year in the music business.

Jessie J was crowned best Solo Artist at last night’s awards, with  fellow Voice judge attending to present her award.

US star Kelly Rowland, who has left a vacancy in the judging panel of the X Factor after quitting the show, won the TV Personality title.

Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden was named best Theatre Actress for her role as Princess Fiona in Shrek the Musical.

Other winners at the London bash, hosted by Graham Norton, include This Morning and the Voice host Holly Willoughby for best Presenter.

Downton Abbey star Jessica Brown Findlay (Lady Sybil Crawley) won top UK TV actress while her co-star Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary) took the Editor’s Special award.

Florence And the Machine were named best band, Lily Collins, the actress daughter of pop star Phil Collins, won the Breakthrough award, the Help star Viola Davis took the Film Actress award and Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria won an Inspiration gong.

Singer Dionne Warwick was named this year’s Icon, in an award presented by Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood.

Presenters included Lily Allen, Chris Moyles, Paloma Faith, Cat Deeley, Jason Isaacs and Stephen Mangan.

The awards, in their ninth year, are the result of around 330,000 votes by readers of Glamour magazine and its website.

Minogue, who wore a shimmering gold, floor-length Stella McCartney gown, said of her award: "I don’t know how I ended up here when I started out in dungarees (in Neighbours) pretending I could fix a car.

"I nearly blew up my first car as I didn’t realise it had water and oil and all that stuff."

She added that she "hoped to become a better woman. Like my grandma. She’s really my icon. I’d like to dedicate this to my grandma and mother".

Ronnie Wood and his ex-Faces bandmate Rod Stewart were at the ceremony, Stewart with wife Penny Lancaster and Wood with his new girlfriend.

Wood, who presented an award to Warwick, joked that he was having a feud with Stewart because he had hidden his script.

"He’s given me the wrong one as well. never mind. I’ll let my radio and TV prowess take over," he said as he got to the stage.

Jessie J said of her win: "I’m loving that last year I was a girl and this year I’m a woman. I’ve got my bum out more."

Holden said she was thrilled with her award because theatre was her "first love".

Downton star Brown Findlay dedicated her award to all the "wonderful, wonderful women in Downton".

Moyles presented Fearne Cotton with her sixth Glamour award, joking: "They keep giving it to her because they know she’ll turn up and she’s very pretty," and said of his own weight loss: "I’m the new Gary Barlow."

Lea Michele, who won best US TV actress for Glee and took her mother to the awards, said the drama "showed kids what true beauty is, and to be comfortable in your own skin".

US actress Davis said on taking the film actress award: "Hollywood says that women can’t make films that make money. the Help came out in the same year as Bridesmaids. It’s girl power."

Host Norton opened the ceremony with a couple of risqui jokes, saying model Yasmin Le Bon had shaved her armpits for the event, and that he was feeling nervous, shaking like fashion designer "John Galliano in a synagogue".

He said of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee: "For younger members of the audience I should point out that a Diamond Jubilee is 60 years on the throne. she hasn’t had a vajazzle. As far as we know."
