Leverkusen, Germany – Bayer Leverkusen Sunday dismissed coach Robin Dutt following five successive defeats and appointed former Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia in joint charge.

Hyypia, capped 105 times by Finland, will coach the team along with youth team coach Sascha Lewandowski at least until the end of the season, the club said.

Dutt, 47, who was appointed coach at the beginning of the season after spending four years at Freiburg, was dismissed with immediate effect.

Leverkusen have slipped to sixth in the table and are in danger of missing out on Europa League qualification.

Managing director Wolfgang Holzhaeuser said: ‘We simply had to act to give a sign and continue with a fresh wind of pursuing our aim for the season of qualifying for international competition.’

Hyypia, 38, ended his playing career at Leverkusen before obtaining his coaching qualifications in Finland.
